In today’s society we must be aware how increased societal stressors impact children in minority groups, including LGBTQ identified youth. These youth are almost 5 times more likely to have attempted suicide than their heterosexual peers. Bereaved LGBTQ youth have the additional challenge of navigating the world of loss that few peers recognize or understand. At a time when these young people are trying to accept their own identity, they have had their world rocked by a death. This presentation will provide information on the general challenges of LGBTQ youth in today’s society and how they impact an individual’s grief process. It will also include tools to help professionals have inclusive conversations that address the specific concerns of grieving LGBTQ youth and their families.
