COVID-19 has brought the issues of trauma and grief front and center for children, families, and bereavement programs. Although this pandemic is new, lessons learned from past tragedies and crises can inform what we do today. Suggestions for adapting services based on what is known about risk factors, post disaster pathways for mental health, and best practices for coping will be presented.

About the Presenter

Robin F. Goodman, PhD., ATR-BC, is a psychologist and art therapist, certified Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapist, and trained in therapy for Complicated Grief. Currently she is Associate Director of Public Education and Bereavement for the Child HELP Partnership at St. Johbn’s University and consults to Allegheny General Hospital Center for Traumatic Stress in Children and Adolescents. She previously served as Executive Director and Program Director of A Caring Hand, Founded in Memory of Billy Esposito. Prior background includes Project Director for the New York City Children’s Grief Connection, Director of Family Programs at Voices of September 11th and consultant to the Department of Defense Educational Opportunities Directorate. At the NYU Child Study Center she served as Director of Bereavement Programs, Co-Director of the 9/11 Child and Family Recovery Program, the National Child Mental Health Initiative and AboutOurKids.org. She established the Child Life Program in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital and the behavioral health service at Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Author credits include Caring for Kids After Trauma and Death: A Guide for Parents and Professionals, which she developed and was used throughout the country following 9/11, The Day Our World Changed: Children’s Art of 9/11, Childhood Revealed: Art Expressing Pain, Discovery and Hope, Ready to Remember: Jeremy’s Journey of Hope and Healing, and Rosie Remembers: Forever in Her Heart.
